This is the first part of Roald Dahl s autobiography, covering his childhood years from birth in 1916 until working for the Shell company from 1934 36 on the eve of his departure to Tanzania on a 3 year posting these years in Africa are detailed in the follow up book, Going Solo.Much of the book details his schooldays, including unhappy years as a boarder at a repressive prep school in Weston super Mare and subsequent time at Repton, where he eventually became a respected sports team captain of fives and the squash team and the only ever sports team captain not made a prefect due to his rebellious, anti establishment nature.Spliced in between the schoolday stories are tales of the family s annual summer holiday expeditions to Norway to live on remote idyllic islands for weeks at a time, a hair raising first experience in a motor car driven by his elder sister who crashed and injured young Roald so badly that his nose was almost severed, and having his adenoids removed...

Well written of course, interesting, funny and sometimes quite horrific Some of the men that ran the private schools Dahl attended, by today s standards they would have all be arrested and sent down for life Glad times have changed.I love Dahl and this tale of his childhood reminds me of why I can also see where he got his ideas from Cadbury sending chocolate testing boxes, to his school..

I bought this for my husband as a prequel to reading Going Solo He is not a keen reader but is getting through the chapters quickly and enjoys the clear printing and easy style even when the content is emotional.

After reading so many books of Dahl for children, no doubt that one would love to read the making of great story teller through his childhood The books is account of Roald Dahl s memoirs of childhood and teenage, right from kindergarten till age of 20 It traverses his life in England and Norway his origin His days at boarding school are filled with fun and mischievousness One can find the comic sense and naughty humor that got built into him which is evident in his later stories And Quentin Blake s illustrations are as wonderful as those are in all Dahl s books. This hardback edition by Jonathan Cape ISBN 978 0857550460 is small in height and very cute for young hands.Recommended for age group 10.

I bought this for my son as he received Going Solo, the second book of Dahl s life in a box set I read it first to make sure it was suitable and thoroughly enjoyed it, although not as much as the sequel I was especially touched by the fact that Dahl wrote weekly to his mother and she kept all his letters.
